I put my 98 back on the road this morning after a couple month hibernation. While it was down, I added a 12 inch glasspack muffler and 29 inch fishtail tail pipe off of that. I absolutely hated the factory sound, mine was so quiet (to me, I drive an open exhaust semi for a living) that I couldn't hear the engine at idle. The fishtail pipe sounds a bit tinny, although that is easy to fix. The muffler could use some more insulating glass batting, again, easy to fix. With this combination, morning warm up on the first choke setting is LOUD. If you know what a UH-1 Huey medivac helicopter is, the bike exhaust is now a dead ringer for it, but only on choke. Off choke, it made the doorknob on my house vibrate from 4 feet away.
Try the stock pipe for awhile and see what you think. It is quiet due to the lean exhaust and low 80 decibel maximum output rating. If you get your mechanic to open up the sealed airscrew (on the carb), you can change the pitch if you richen the fuel circuit.
Welcome to the family. Keep it in the wind.
